What skills are required for career progression from officer to team leader, and supervisor to manager?
Within Axis Security promotion programme, candidates need to display a number of key skills to be considered for the next role in their supervisory and or management progression.
When Axis Security is looking to move Security Officers up to Team Leaders, we look for officers who stand out through their consistent personal presentation and timekeeping. Their personality and approachability are also key. Team Leaders must be able to communicate at a range of levels both internally and externally to clients, have a proactive approach to their work and be able to work effectively in a team as well as individually. Many of these skills are nurtured and developed within our training courses.
Officers must understand the company process and procedures and have the ambition to go above and beyond and have the ability and willingness to gain new skills - which is key for all levels of career progression.
For more senior management positions, Axis Security is looking for those supervisors who have built a solid foundation in their teams as a supervisor; someone who has made a positive contribution and introduced new ideas. They will understand Axis’ core values and positively and proactively apply them in their everyday work, leading the other team members to follow suit.
For those individuals moving into a supervisory role, Axis offers a two-day Intensive Supervisory programme, which equips them with the important theoretical knowledge and skills needed in their day-to-day role, which goes beyond the SIA licence linked training courses. All delegates are issued a comprehensive Supervisor Workbook, with many exercises to complete, and a USB stick for both course work and use as a tool for their new role. Following the course, delegates are required to complete a short project from their workplace, based on a situation they have faced and how they dealt with it.
Axis’ Supervisory to Management programme includes access to management level apprenticeships through our Apprenticeship Levy. We have a number of supervisors and managers currently on the programme at Level 3 and Level 5 in both general leadership and management, and some more focused on first-line security management.
Why it is commercially sensible to invest in, in order to retain staff and advance professionalism?
As a company, we recognise our most important asset is our people. Over the past few years, we have invested heavily into a people strategy led by our Group HR & Learning Director, Naomi Austen.
We have significantly changed how we approach training, so that our people can undertake a learning and development journey. We’ve broken down silos created by disjointed external training, and centralised our training function, which was rebranded as a dedicated Learning Academy – The Axis Academy. This training is made accessible throughout the UK, more than it’s ever been, offering over 100 courses delivered through face-to-face, e-learning, blended and distance learning.
Many of our top-class security officers have the drive, commitment and passion to progress, both within our business, as well as the industry. Our approach to training and development is to support them through this progression and support their acquisition of skills required for their new roles.
How does Axis track and document skills?
Our training management system combines all training data and records and we have a tiered internal system for managers to access their direct and indirect reports. It is a system that automates important and vital processes such as the individual’s training schedule and certifications, it logs all their training records, courses they have completed, and courses that are upcoming. It also gives them direct access to the built-in e-learning portal, which is easily accessible on portable devices or desktop computer.
From a business perspective, the e-learning platform allows Axis to manage and deliver key learning modules which are easily updated with new content when required and provides essential tracking for audit purposes.
